In the pursuit of our goals, whether they are related to fitness, personal development, or any other aspect of life, a crucial question often arises: Should we rely on rules or decisions to guide our actions? This blog post delves into the concept of rules versus decisions and explores the impact of each approach on our journey to success.
Rules: Your Secret to Consistency
When we talk about rules, we refer to setting nonnegotiable tasks or behaviors that we must follow without allowing room for personal discretion. Take, for example, the goal of going to the gym 4-5 times a week. If you decide to create a rule, you would schedule specific gym sessions on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. These sessions become fixed appointments in your calendar, and there is no debate or decision-making process involved.
The beauty of rules lies in their consistency. When you establish a rule, you commit to a predefined action, and this commitment becomes an integral part of your identity. This transformation is essential because it sets you on a path to becoming the person you aspire to be. By saying, "I am a person that goes to the gym consistently," you create a positive self-image that can significantly boost your confidence and motivation.
Decisions: The Power to Choose
On the other hand, when you approach your goals through decisions, you retain the freedom to choose whether or not to take a particular action. While this might seem empowering at first, it can also be a double-edged sword. With the power to decide, you may find yourself wrestling with the urge to skip the gym or procrastinate on other essential tasks.
The risk with decisions is that they can lead to inconsistency. When you have the option to decide not to pursue your goals, it becomes easier to lose track and veer off course. The lack of a structured framework can lead to wavering commitment and a slower pace of progress.
The Empowering Aspect of Rules
Rules have a unique power – they are hard to argue with, especially when they become an integral part of your identity. When you set a rule for yourself, you are essentially saying, "This is who I am, and this is what I do." People tend to respect and follow their own rules because those rules reflect their values, goals, and ambitions.
Rules are not open to debate; they are firm commitments that shape your actions and, by extension, your life. When you have a set of well-defined rules in place, you take control of your journey and eliminate the element of chance. This empowerment allows you to take pride in the person you are becoming and the consistency you are achieving.
In the battle between rules and decisions, it's clear that rules offer a structured and empowering path to achieving your goals. By turning your objectives into nonnegotiable rules, you create a consistent routine that becomes an integral part of your identity. This positive identity empowers you to become the best version of yourself, in line with your aspirations.
While decisions have their place in our lives, and there may be times when flexibility is necessary, rules provide a solid foundation for success. Take back control of your journey, set clear rules, and watch as you become the person you've always wanted to be. Your rules are not constraints; they are your keys to unlocking your full potential.

This might singlehandedly be the most clear and powerful message I have ever read. I say this because throughout my entire life I have set goals and slowly watched them disappear because I allowed the option to chose be apart of it. This is the solution to all of my procrastination.
